在長平之戰後期，白起有次準備發動奇襲，當時他下令禁止士兵食用羊肉，也不許生火做飯，只能吃冷食，由於秦軍素來以羊肉為主要肉食，因此當時帶了很多羊肉到前線，面對這項命令，眾將士都覺得未免小題大做了，連日常飲食都要下軍令，但也只能乖乖遵守。天線

當時卻有個士兵決定挑戰這個軍令，他悄悄藏了一包羊肉，並趁著夜色漸深，士兵們都已歇息時生火煮羊肉，由於羊肉的香味濃烈，再加上他咀嚼的聲音過大，很快就驚醒了旁邊的戰友，大家紛紛圍過來，爭相吃起羊肉。正當大家吃到興頭上時，營帳門突然被拉開了，白起將軍踏步走進來，然後大聲呵斥，「你們好大的擔子，竟敢違反軍令，全部拉出去重打三十軍棍」，偷吃的士兵們遭懲戒後依舊不懂將軍為何下此軍令？

白起便說道：「由於羊肉香氣濃重，今夜無風，在五十步之外都能聞到食用羊肉的味道，若是有風，羊肉的味道還能飄得更遠，如果全軍都吃羊肉，等於把我們的位置告訴了敵人，這樣還要如何伏擊作戰？」眾士兵聽完這一席話後恍然大悟，連忙將羊肉收了起來，這件事傳開以後，全軍便嚴格執行「禁羊肉令」，再也沒有人敢私自偷吃羊肉；最終，白起率秦軍成功進占長平，取得了這一場戰爭的絕對性勝利。
